The Warriors are four-time NBA champions with guard Steph Curry at the helm, so you’d figure new acquisitions on the roster must adjust to Golden State’s playing style.
That’s usually the case. But after the Warriors acquired guard Dennis Schröder, forward Draymond Green said that Golden State, which has been starved for offense lately, must adjust to what Schröder has to offer, namely his pick-and-roll ability. (Per the San Francisco Chronicle.)
Kerr said Sunday the Warriors need his skill set. Green agreed during his postgame news conference.
“We play a certain style of basketball that he does not really play, and I don’t think the goal is to play the style of basketball we play. We need someone to do the things that he does,” Green said Sunday after a 143-133 loss to the Dallas Mavericks.
“We have to adjust to him because he’s bringing something that this team needs. And to just to make him fall in line with what we do, we’re wasting our time even bringing him here,” Green continued.
Kerr and the Warriors are known for their motion offense. But they need scoring badly enough to adjust their playing style for Schröder. That says a lot about how open the Warriors are to any ideas that can prolong their dynasty, which has been in a rut since winning the NBA title in 2022.
Schröder is averaging more than 18 points and 6-plus assists a game this season, so it’s easy to see why Golden State is ready to accommodate. Schröder immediately becomes the Warriors’ No. 2 scorer, just ahead of forward Andrew Wiggins.
The new-look Warriors will debut on Thursday in Memphis against the Grizzlies. Watch for Schröder wearing No. 71 for Golden State.
