Fantasy football is supposed to be fun. But if you’ve ever obsessed over lineups at midnight or replayed a brutal loss in your head, you know the stress doesn’t always end on Sunday.

That tension was front and center at DenTek’s Ultimate Fantasy Football Punishment reveal, which I attended during Super Bowl week at Splash Sports Bar at Thrive City in San Francisco. The event crowned the season’s lowest-scoring fantasy football player, with a twist: a giant banana statue built in the winner’s likeness.

The punishment went to CJ Kempler, whose season-long fantasy struggles culminated in a very public (and very funny) unveiling. Hosted by 49ers Pro Bowl long snapper Jon Weeks, with appearances from Ronde Barber and Roquan Smith, the moment leaned into laughs and lighthearted football fun.

Views from the event. Can you spot the BASH blogger-in-chief?

I spoke with Weeks about the event and the culture around fantasy football. Even though he faces immense pressure every snap he takes, he realizes that pressure from fantasy football is all too real.

“I don’t want that pressure, man. Keep that pressure away from me. I’m good at my job because I stay under the radar,” Weeks says.

According to a DenTek-commissioned poll, more than half of fantasy football players say the stress of the season has kept them up at night, and over two-thirds report clenching or grinding their teeth during high-stress moments. DenTek boasts the No. 1 over-the-counter dental guard to prevent that stress from causing damage.

Think of it as an NFL mouthpiece that players wear on gameday. But DenTek’s guard prevents teeth grinding at night due to fantasy football nightmares.

But of course, fantasy football is fun. Weeks told the BASH that he and other players who play under the radar have their own playful ambitions of starting a league one day.

“We started to throw around an offensive lineman-specialist-kicker-punter-snapper league and how we would score points and all of that fun stuff. So, if that’s something we want to get started, we could figure it out,” he says.

The combination of fun and stress is relatable for all fantasy football players. That’s what made the event memorable. It used humor and sports culture to spotlight something real: stress doesn’t shut off when the games do, and it can show up in unexpected ways.

The banana statue may steal the photos, but the takeaway that stuck with me was more than the spectacle. I met a roomful of like-minded football fans to celebrate a sport we all love, even if it does stress us out from time to time.
