Ahhh the plus-minus rating. It can say a lot about a player’s performance, and it can also be deciving in some cases.
It seems that Kelly Oubre’s incredibly bad plus-minus rating in the Warriors’ 111-107 loss to the Celtics on Tuesday was for real, however. It’s sort of like Sesame Street: One of these things is not like the other. Take a look at the box score and plus-minus rating, which is the second column from the right in Ethan Strauss’ tweet below.
Holy smokes, Oubre Jr. was minus-25 on the night, and every other starter had a positive rating. In a close game, and in any game, actually, this is a huge red flag. Could this mean coach Steve Kerr will finally get tired of Oubre’s inconsistent (mostly bad) play?
Here’s some more data from The Athletic, this time from editor Tim Kawakami.
Wow. Quite the disparity there. It’s frustrating because Oubre Jr. started the game well. But he just slowly lost his way, even missing an extremely easy dunk. He’s missed multiple dunks this season in fact, per Wes Goldberg of The East Bay Times.
Serious? That won’t help the plus-minus. Considering all of this info, Kerr and his staff must be thinking about a switch in the staring lineup or the rotation. Who could blame them after the Warriors wasted a brilliant performance (see above box-score) from Stephen Curry? Time will tell what Kerr does, starting Thursday night against the Mavericks.
