Jason Richardson is not only Golden State royalty, he’s NBA royalty.
He earned that NBA status by dunking the basketball in ways never before seen. He’s a two-time NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion and will serve as judge in the 2021 contest, set for halftime of the All-Star game.
That’s awesome news. Richardson deserves the recognition as judge that other dunking greats, such as Julius “Dr. J” Erving and Dominique Wilkins, have enjoyed. To celebrate, here is Richardson’s near complete body of work in the Dunk Contest, courtesy of the Warriors’ Twitter account.
As is obvious from that dope video, Richardson was an unbelievable leaper, especially off two feet. He gave Dub Nation (which existed at the time but lacked a cool nickname) something to cheer for and be proud of. He went on to star with the “We Believe” Warriors squad that shocked the No. 1 seed in the West, the Mavericks, in the first round of the playoffs.
Richardson should be proud of his assignment as judge, and I’m certainly hyped to see him on the big stage again. He deserves it, as do older-school Warriors fans.
