It’s not summer yet, but we have a blockbuster.
The 49ers executed an NFL-altering trade on Friday, sending their first-round pick to the Dolphins for the No. 3 overall selection in the upcoming draft, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Check out the details.
Wow. General manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan must really want one of the top players available this year. That’s a lot of capital to trade. First-round picks have lost their value a bit in recent years, but that’s three total traded by the 49ers front office.
So what are they after? Per Schefter, San Francisco has entered the quarterback sweepstakes. Their holding onto current starter, Jimmy Garoppolo, for now, according to Schefty’s sources.
Either Ohio State’s Justin Fields or BYU’s Zach Wilson figure to be available, however. It seems as though Garoppolo’s days in San Francisco are coming to an end. It’s hard to imagine the 49ers trading so much for anything but a franchise quarterback.
