No. 1 | Big Dub

When the Warriors faced the 76ers in San Francisco, guard Ben Simmons was getting all he wanted around the hoop early. At one point, Wiseman blocked Simmons’ shot, as if he had simply had enough and wasn’t going to take it anymore.

It was exactly what the Warriors want from Wiseman: size, intimidation, athleticism, determination. In the moment, I yelled out, “That’s right, BIG DUB! Get that shot out of here!” Or something close to that. “Big Dub” was the important part.

It’s a play off the nicknames I don’t like and the ones that I do. It has the “Big” factor, and keeps the “Dub” aspect, which is appealing because “Dubs” is of course a nickname for the Warriors as well.

So it’s a bit of a double meaning. But don’t get this twisted and say “THE Big Dub.” It’s “Big Dub.” As with “J. Dub,” the dub part represents Wiseman’s last name, not the Warriors franchise. After that, enjoy the double meaning.

The real No. 1, however, could still be out there. Whatever name sticks with the media, if any of them do, will likely be spontaneous and might not exist yet. That’s why my “Big Dub” is No. 1. It was natural, and inspired by spectacular events on the court.

So keep your ears peeled, and get ready to be inspired by the talents of this young phenom. He’s just getting started, and it’s only a matter of time before his play on the court inspires more nicknames, as Wiseman strives for All-Star appearances, All-NBA consideration and NBA championships.
