Bay Area sports world on edge as 49ers prepare to make big decision in NFL draft

There’s ample on-field/on-court action within the Bay Area sports scene today, Thursday, April 29. But it’s hard to tell. That’s because the San Francisco 49ers are set to make an enormous off-field decision that will impact the franchise for years to come.

The NFL Draft is tonight (well, the first round, anyway), and the 49ers traded up to the No. 3 overall selection last month. In an open secret, they plan to select a quarterback.

So whom will it be? Most pundits agree that general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan will have their choice between Alabama product Mac Jones and small school wonder Trey Lance, who attended North Dakota State. Ohio State QB Justin Fields is another option.

Jones is widely considered an ideal fit for Shanahan’s offense, which demands athleticism from the pocket but not necessarily a dual-threat QB, which are all the rage in 2021. If Lynch and Shanahan want one of those, Lance or Fields should be their guy.

And since it’s the NFL Draft, we know that anything can happen. With so much media and fan attention to the pre-draft process, misinformation is circulated nearly as much as accurate info. That’s why this non-sporting event is taking over the Bay Area. The unknown is killing us.

But we’ll know soon, so buckle up. It’s just the beginning of a gigantic story in Bay Area sports — one that will eventually make its way to the actual playing field.
