“We had some fun on social media back in the day.”
Those are the words of Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, preparing to face one of the league’s young guns, Memphis G Ja Morant, for the first time — on the court, that is. As Curry referenced, the two had an interesting exchange on social media in 2020.
It stemmed from the Grizzlies having disparaging words for Curry’s former championship teammate, forward Andre Iguodala. Curry clapped back, and Morant followed up by tweeting a picture of another former teammate of Curry’s, superstar Kevin Durant.
Twitter thought this was hilarious, since that’s what Twitter is. Crack a joke on one of the best players of all time. This was before Curry returned this season and erased any doubts about his greatness, of which there were plenty.
Not to mention that Curry and Iguodala won a title without Durant. And another thing: Curry wasn’t shy about supporting Iguodala, another player that won Finals MVP over Curry, just as Durant did twice. He knows that titles are titles.
Though to some, Curry will never prove he’s worthy of being considered the league’s best. Curry knows that, and that’s must be why he called the social media dustup “fun.”
We’ll see who will have bragging rights after the Warriors game against Memphis on Sunday. It’s the biggest game for the Warriors in a couple years, and Morant is surely intent on backing up his trash talk. And though Curry said it’s all fun, you know the competitor inside him is smoldering as well.
