Coach Kyle Shanahan really likes his starting quarterback on the 49ers, Jimmy Garoppolo. Despite rampant speculation about the start of the Trey Lance era in San Francisco, (including at the BASH), he says that Garoppolo could start this week against the Texans, despite a fairly nasty injury to his throwing hand.
This is great news for Garoppolo, and I’m honestly happy he doesn’t need surgery. But I really want to see if Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, has what it takes to steer the 49ers to and through the playoffs.
It remains possible that Shanahan is simply leaving all of his options open. That will make it more difficult for the Texans to prepare for the 49ers’ offense. We’ll simply have to wait and see what happens, and probably slow it down a bit when it comes to speculation, too. Lance’s time will come, eventually (I can only assume).
