Report: 49ers QB Trey Lance ‘almost certainly’ to start vs. Texans

The world of the San Francisco 49ers has revolved around the injured thumb of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo this week, but it appears that may change on Sunday.

Garoppolo didn’t practice on Thursday and almost certainly won’t play Sunday against the Texans, according to this report from The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami. That means rookie QB Trey Lance would get the start. Note that Garoppolo was present at practice but was in street clothes.

Garoppolo had a rough game last week against the Titans, and many NFL observers were calling for a switch at QB anyway, so this is quite a development. Reports about Garoppolo’s thumb seemed bad initially, but the 49ers downplayed the injury early this week. Now, it appears Garoppolo’s thumb is in pretty bad shape, after all.

Will Lance take advantage and seize the QB position in San Francisco for good? He’s supposed to, as a top-5 pick in the NFL Draft. The 49ers need a win regardless of who is at the helm, however. They have an 8-7 record and have to keep winning to ensure a spot in the playoffs. What better time for Lance to take over? Coach Kyle Shanahan, along with 49ers fans everywhere, is undoubtedly hoping he does just that.
